Bill's Corner- An Eastern Spruce Perspective

It was another solid day of activity and sales in the lumber market yesterday, although the volume of orders was less. The eastern mills had products to offer, but with shipment times further out in May. Prices moved higher with slight differences between the mills. They were more interested in building on their order files than jumping prices and losing potential business. Logistics continued to be a problem for the eastern Canadian mills, both with a lack of railcars and truckers. Several voids on many key items at the reloads has developed, impacting quick delivery of them.

Are mills separately advertising product availability and shipment times? For example, If someone buys a load for the week of 2/9, then can they expect the product to ship that week or is there an understanding that buyers will need to wait X days/weeks for shipment.

Eastern mills have become conservative in what they offer for delivery times. They do not want to have continued situations with clients why something is late or when it will deliver. The mills would rather be early than late. they are working with the equipment and drivers they have been getting recently. Of course that raises the concerns that they are unable to ship out what they are producing.
