Traders were motivated in the eastern spruce lumber market yesterday. Whether it was wishful thinking or an underlining current of energy, activity surged, and orders flowed. There was a movement afoot. The dynamics of the market seemed to be in flux. Confidence was high. Conversations with eastern mills centered around the imbalance between their average selling prices and the price they are paying for logs and what can be done to return to profitability. Procuring logs was also problematic. Some mills have scaled back production to conserve log supply.
