Negativity and apathy helped to slow sales in the eastern spruce lumber market yesterday. Also impacting orders was less product being available from the eastern mills. Many mills have decreased their production schedules ahead of their holiday shutdowns considering current market conditions and the difficulty of procuring logs. Although prices were down on the higher grades, the lower grades have been hotly contested and have firmed. A growing belief that downside risk is minimized on many items, is influencing buying philosophy even though expectations are for demand to ease in the upcoming weeks.
