The wildfires raging over eastern Canada were the catalyst to the heightened activity in the eastern spruce lumber market yesterday. The concern and threat temporarily closed some mills altogether and kept logging crews out of the forests, especially in Northern Quebec. Eastern Canadian mills went into a defensive selling mode, either pulling material off the market or at the very least firming up prices. This news roused up dealers, many of which turned to the market to buy product. They found fewer items available from the mills and firm pricing from the reloads.
