Demand and sales strengthened in the eastern spruce lumber market yesterday. Although transactions improved, eastern mills with lumber ready to sell and ship were disappointed with the volume of business they were getting. These same mills that had been pushing the envelope lately for higher prices, saw potential business going to distributors and wholesalers, who were willing to take less. They adjusted prices accordingly to compete in the market. With prices appreciating substantially over the last 30 days, busy dealers have continued to buy only what is needed, not speculating to buying more.
