It was a rip-roaring day for sales in the eastern spruce lumber market yesterday. There was a heavy volume of orders transacted, one of the best daily tallies seen recently. Strong demand spurred the action from various fronts. Whether it came from jobs starting or dealers shoring up lean inventories, needs were evident and reacted upon. The eastern mills were active participants but at the expense of lower prices. One difference with them was that they traded and took counters on items that were not yet produced, which they had been quite defensive about lately.
