Activity was quieter last week in the eastern spruce lumber market. The number of orders transacted was well off the pace seen over the previous two weeks. Traders pointed to several reasons that affected the slowdown. Cold temps and wintry weather were the major factors along with lite demand and soft prices on several items. Even though the mills did not have a full basket of products to sell, what they did have did not draw much interest. By-products such as lower grade items bucked the trend by being firm if not stronger in price and considerably tight in supply.
