Steady demand and increasing prices highlighted activity in the eastern spruce lumber market yesterday. There was also growing concern of a potential Canadian rail strike looming early next week. Supply remained tight in the marketplace not only from the mills, but distributors were beginning to have voids on certain items for quick shipments. A more defensive posture was evident from them. An increase of approximately 6% in export duties on Canadian lumber shipments to the U. S. takes effect on Monday.
