Bill's Corner- An Eastern Spruce Perspective

Activity in the lumber market ended last week on a quieter note, although demand was steady throughout the week. Lower prices kept commitments at bay, diminishing the volume of orders transacted. The lack of trucks contained how much product the eastern mills could deliver in a timely manner, especially for destinations outside of New England. Uncertainty as to how the mills will sell, ahead of next week’s potential increase in tariffs, is impacting buying philosophy. Some believe that prices will continue to erode while others feel that they will rebound and appreciate.

@Jim_Schumacher’s cartoons perfectly reflect this sentiment, don’t you agree?

@Mike_Kotloski moving forward, do you have any idea if truck availability is going to get better or worse?

should remain tight for the foreseeable future as it is the lack of manpower not equipment that is lacking.

Good question @Andrew_Gibson . I am working with some companies who’ve had their truck orders pushed back from Q2/3 2021 to Q1 2022, and as @william_giguere mentioned, we are still dealing with a sever shortage with drivers. The lack of drivers may be hiding the true supply chain issues with new trucks as some companies are holding back ordering new equipment until the can get drivers, IMO.
