Canada and United States strengthen cooperation to combat wildfires

In response to the escalating threat of wildfires, the Government of Canada has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United States to enhance cooperation in combating wildland fires and protecting communities. The MOU establishes procedures for the exchange of resources and promotes mutual assistance and cooperation. The arrangement aims to facilitate the efficient exchange of wildfire suppression resources across borders and expand collaboration in prevention, research, innovation, and risk mitigation.

With Canada facing one of its most challenging wildfire seasons on record, the partnership has already yielded significant support. Over 1,500 American firefighters, incident managers, and support staff have been deployed to assist in battling the devastating blazes, showcasing the strength of international collaboration in times of crisis.

In a separate commitment, the United States has pledged technological support through its FireGuard program. This initiative will enhance fire detection capabilities, providing more frequent and consistent monitoring of fires throughout the day. Equipping firefighters with improved information will enable them to respond more effectively and mitigate the impact of wildfires.

Looking ahead, Canada’s forthcoming WildFireSat mission, set to launch in 2029, will revolutionize fire monitoring. As the world’s first purpose-built, public satellite system dedicated to monitoring fires, it will provide daily, near-real-time intelligence on all active wildfires. This unprecedented capability will empower fire management agencies to make critical decisions promptly, ensuring a swift and targeted response to wildfires.

The collaborative efforts between Canada and the United States demonstrate a shared commitment to protect communities and combat the growing wildfire crisis. By pooling resources, expertise, and cutting-edge technology, both countries are actively working to mitigate the effects of climate change and safeguard lives, livelihoods, and the environment for future generations.
