Lumber prices flat on low sales volumes

A major sawmill closure in Western Canada made waves during an otherwise quiet winter week of sales for the lumber industry.

In the week ending January 26, 2024, the price of Western S-P-F 2x4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$442 mfbm, said forest products industry price guide newsletter Madison’s Lumber Reporter. This is flat from the previous week when it was $442.

That week’s price is up by +$31, or +8%, from one month ago when it was US$411 mfbm.

Compared to the same week last year, when it was US$394 mfbm, that week’s price is up by +$48, or +12%. Compared to two years ago when it was US$1,220 mfbm, that week’s price is down by -$778 or -64%.

In the week ending January 26, 2024, the price of Southern Yellow Pine East Side 2x4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$417 mfbm. This is down by -$28, or -6%, from the previous week when it was US$445 mfbm.

That week’s price is down by -$36, or -8%, from one month ago when it was US$453 mfbm.

Compared to the same week last year, when it was US$455 mfbm, that week’s price is down by -$38, or -8%. Compared to two years ago when it was US$1,515 mfbm, that week’s price is down by -$1,098, or -72%.
