On September 17 and 18, 2024, the Wood Pellet Association of Canada (WPAC) will be harnessing the energy of industry experts in Victoria, BC to discuss the critical role biomass and wood pellets play in the transition to a greener and brighter future.
It’s Canada’s largest gathering of the Canadian wood pellet industry, and the event attracts hundreds of wood pellet, biomass and bioenergy professionals from across the country, as well the US, Europe and Asia.
Over two days of sessions and networking events themed, Powering Sustainability: The Role of Biomass in Electrification, experts will examine the electrification revolution taking place across Canada and around the globe.
Reducing reliance on fossil fuels and shifting to emissions-free electricity to propel cars, heat homes, and run factories will require doubling, or possibly tripling, the amount of power we make now. Biomass and wood pellets are part of the solution.
According to experts,Canada must build more electricity generation in the next 25 years than it has over the last century to support a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. The challenge is not just limited to Canada, but one of global interest.
“Canada’s pellet sector is a global powerhouse not just in producing pellets but in the global fight against climate change,” stresses Gordon Murray, Executive Director, WPAC. “Powering the shift from fossil fuels to clean, renewable and responsible energy will require new innovations and solutions.”
Conference topics include:
- Drivers, opportunities, and challenges behind the green industrial revolution.
- The role of biomass in electrification.
- Market outlook for wood pellets.
- The role of AI in biomass.
- Indigenous-led approaches to sustainability.
- New advances in traceability to meet EUDR.
As a precursor to the event, on September 16, WPAC and the BC First Nations Forestry Council will host a pre-conference workshop. Its dialogue and breakout sessions are designed to create a realistic path forward for the pellet sector to advance the value of the pellet sector with full and meaningful participation of First Nations.
And how many of us can boast they’ve had an asteroid named after them? WPAC’s Keynote Speaker can! He’s one of Canada’s best-known science journalists, making science accessible to the public for more than 50 years. The host of CBC Radio’s award-winning science program, Quirks & Quarks, Bob McDonald’s recap of his latest book, The Future is Now: Solving the Climate Crisis with Today’s Technology is sure to stimulate the crowd.
