A new competition, Mass Timber Competition: Building to Net-Zero Carbon, was just announced with the intent of encouraging designers in the United States to use mass timber in their new projects. This funding from the Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) and USDA Forest Service (USDA) will amount to $2 million across a diverse array of buildings, specifically attempting to incentivize lower-emission materials and reduce the overall carbon footprint of the construction industry. The mass timber for the project must be sourced from sustainable forests. Application here: Mass Timber Competition - Softwood Lumber Board
Are competitions like this useful for incentivizing the use of mass timber, or does it required other shifts as well? Maybe in the culture of selection buildings materials? Or actually reducing the costs of mass timber itself?
@Andrew_Gibson@Nadia … Good looking out!! Our Mass Timber design won’t be done by the March 30th deadline or we would have entered! Our project is still under wraps but in the end, we are developing stackable Mass Timber residential units in Missoula, Montana, spring 2023. More info coming soon!!
