Carbon Offset forests will only work if the Carbon Credit system is repaired. Currently, carbon credits reward those who buy up mature forests that would otherwise go unharvested.
Rather. carbon credits should reward forest landowners for …
- letting forests grow
- thinning of forest to allow for growth
- removal of dead/dry/decomposing material that produces carbon and increases forest fire risk (further releasing carbon).
Forest landowners should not receive carbon credits for letting a mature forest remain fully mature as a fully mature forest produces more carbon than it sequesters. Carbon credits must reward those who cultivate the growth of healthy forests.
